Module1 TA-AOD 101 Basics of Substance Abuse Counseling

  • An overview of the responsibilities and scope of practice of counselors. It will  review the basic knowledge and attitudes of a counselor. In addition, it will discuss skills required in the Initial Phases of the Recovery Process. Topics include an overview of Tap 21 Best Practices domains and the 12 core functions.


Module1 TA-AOD 102 Recovery Concepts

  • An overview of recovery concepts. Class will discuss, AA, NA and other 12 step programs. The differences between treatment strategies and recovery concepts will be identified.


Module1 TA-AOD 103 Developmental Foundations of Counseling

  • This workshop provides a theoretical overview of life-span growth and development emphasizing cognitive-intellectual, cognitive-moral, emotional-self, and social aspects of developmental growth in the human being.

 

Module1 TA-AOD 104 Social Basis of Addiction

  • This workshop will provide students an opportunity to look at the dynamics of substance abuse as they are impacted by, social development, family relationships, treatment and prevention programs, and federal policy.


Module1 TA-AOD 105 Biological Basis of Addiction

  • Students will learn basic neurochemistry of the processes of addiction. Instructors will desribe how drugs affect the central nervous system and why some are more addicting than others. In addition, this workshop provides practical, easy-to-understand information on psychoactive substances. Students will learn about alcohol, marijuana, heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, ecstasy and nicotine and other drugs.


Module1 TA-AOD 106 Psychological Aspects of Addiction Education & Professional Readiness

  • Students will gain practical information on how to identify mental disorders when substance abuse is also present. They will  develop an understanding of psychological theories on human behavior, emotion, learning, cognition and attitudes.  Students will gain a broad foundation of knowledge regarding human nature from a psychological viewpoint.


Module1 TA-AOD 107 Medical Aspects of Addiction

  • Includes and overview of medical issues related to substance abuse l (i.e., TB, HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis) and other health issues related to addiction.


Module1 TA-AOD 108 Pharmacology

  • The goal of this workshop is to provide a solid foundation of knowledge for counselor who is working with participants who are on psychiatric medications. Basic neurobiology and the role of neurotransmitters in psychiatric illness will be reviewed along with an update on the desired effects, duration of action, and side effect profiles of antidepressants, anti-anxiety agents and anti-psychotic medications.


Module1 TA-AOD 109 Cultural Responsibility

  • To introduce, inform and educate the student on factors relating to cultural responsibility in the context of human diversity and its impact in human services.  Students will review the importance of viewing participants through the lens of gender and culture.


Module1 TA-AOD 110 Ethics

  • This workshop is designed to develop the professional identity of counselors by studying the content and application of the ethical standards of the different certifying agencies, the American Psychological Association, CAADAC, CAARR and related professional organizations.


Module1 TA-AOD 111 Confidentiality and HIPAA Standards

  • This workshop is designed to provide students with a full understanding of 42 C.F.R. Part 2 Confidentially regulations, HIPAA – Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act and other legal issues such as mandated reporting, duty to warn and importance of documentation.



Module 2 TA-AOD 112 Assessment, Intake and Screening

  • Students will learn the major signs and symptoms of substance abuse and become familiar with several assessment tools. Instructors will describe definitions and differences in assessment, screening and intake according to the 12 core functions and TAP 21.


Module 2 TA-AOD 113 Recovery and Treatment Planning

  • This workshop will provide an opportunity for students to critically understand the recovery and treatment planning process. Student will coordinate facilitation of a treatment plan and a recovery plan.


Module 2 TA-AOD 114 Case Management Skills

  • The workshop reviews Comprehensive Case Managment for Substance Abuse Treatment. It desribes components of a Case Manager and Models of Case Managment


Module 2 TA-AOD 115 Counseling Relationships

  • Students will be introduced to individual counseling strategies and skills  such as interviewing methods, open and closed ended questioning, reframing, summarizing and oher effective counseling skills.  Self assessment of counsleing skills and personal learning styles will be reviewed.


Module 2 TA-AOD 116 Counseling Approaches Counseling

  • Students will learn different counseling approaches such as Rational Emotive, Behavioral Therapy, Gestalt, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and how they are applied in AOD treatment.


Module 2 TA-AOD 117 Advanced Therapeutic Strategies 

  • This course focuses on advanced interventions  and skills for counselors in critical settings. Emphasis is focused upon cognitive-behavioral, brief therapy and the use of advanced motivational techniques in counseling. Students will learn crisis management, de-escalating a situation and recognizing crisis situations.

 

Module 2 TA-AOD 118 Group Counseling 

  •  This course includes the study of group guidance, group counseling, and group dynamics. Topics such as membership roles, leadership styles, stages of group, nonverbal communication in groups, ethical and professional issues relating to groups.


Module 2 TA-AOD 119 Advanced Group Dynamics

  •  This course is designed to assist students through an advanced process of experiential learning that will provide skill building and strengthen group facilitation skills. It will review different group techniques that can be applied in appropriate service and treatment settings. Focus will be on identifying content vs. process.


Module 2 TA-AOD 120 Advanced Systemic Interventions

  • This course analyzes current therapeutic assessment tools and interventions. Appropriate systemic assessment integrates with systemic therapeutic interventions in resolving crisis resulting from client’s transitional difficulty, chronic illness, relapse, divorce, separation, remarriage or death.


Module 2 TA-AOD 121 Motivational Interviewing

  • This basic introcudtion to Motivational Interviewing includes an understanding of the stages of change model, the phasing of motivational interviewing and interviewing strategies.  It will desribe strategies to  be able to assess participants according to the stages of change and readiness.


Module 2 TA-AOD 122 Community Based interventions

  • This workshop will review issues pertaining to in-home services and other interventions utilized to deal with obstacles and barriers to effective case management and treatment strategies. It will review appropriate boundary setting skills and discuss professional behavior associated with in-home and case management settings. Students will role-play crisis and critical situations to enhance skills while in the community.


Module 2 TA-AOD 123 Linking and Referring

  • This workshop will review making appropriate referrals; barriers to client follow-through; building knowledge about community services and programs; counselor-client interaction around referrals; and establishing a referral network.  In addition, it will identify advocay and community building tecniques.


Module 2 TA-AOD 124 Consultation and Staffing

  • This workshop is designed for those who wish to increase their understanding of utilizing consultation and case staffing for crises, interventions (techniques/strategies) and assessing support. In addition it will cover stages of development for a counselor.


Module 2 TA-AOD 125 Special Populations: Adolescents

  • This course focuses on working with teens in a treatment setting. It will review strategies for working with teens from both a voluntary and coerced system and effective ways to have them participate in programs. In addition, it will review the developmental stages of adolscents and it's effect on thier judgement and decision making skills.


Module 2 TA-AOD 126 Special Population: Working with Families

  • This course discusses family roles, dysfunctions of an alcoholic family and the many family systems within different cultures.



Module 3 TA-AOD 127 Prevention and Community

  • This course will review and describe prevention methods, importance of networking and educating the community. It will review advocacy and identify gaps in and barriers to services; client empowerment and current prevention strategies. National guidelines (SPF) for prevention will be identified.


Module 3 TA-AOD 128 Research and Program Evaluation

  • Students will review and learn about the process of research, data gathering and evaluation. Students will learn basic statistical concepts.  They will learn to read and understand research papers and the value of research in the AOD field. Instruction will also include program evaluation and outcome measurement.


Module 3 TA-AOD 129 Management, Hierarchy, Skills and Development

  • This course offers an intense, conceptually-based and applications oriented course of study for individuals interested in enhancing their leadership and management capabilities within the nonprofit setting. It will review levels of management, supervisory and leadership skills and organizational development.


Module 3 TA-AOD 130 Contractual Requirements

  • This course will provide an overview of the terms and definitions of the many different funding sources; both private and governmental. Students will learn the value of balancing contract requirements with effective clinical care.


Module 3 TA-AOD 131 Overview of Advanced Program Policies and Procedures

  • This course will provide an overview of human resources, quality assurance, personnel and other policy and procedure components.


Module 3 TA-AOD 132 Personal Growth and Self Care

  • This course will review rate of burn-out with-in the social services field. It will describe early assessment tools and prevention and self-care methods.
