Alcohol and Drug (SP-AOD 200)

The Special Populations Alcohol and Drug course (SP-AOD 200)
is separated into four core modules.
 
The first module is set to be an overview of advanced learning in AOD studies.
Three of the modules will give you expertise in a specific population: 
Gender Studies
Co-occurring Studies
Forensic Studies
 
The classes are specifically designed for students or persons in this field who have some experience working with chemical dependency. Although one may attend with little or no experience they may have to work much harder (reading, research and skill building) than one who attends with previous experience.
 
These classes also qulaify for:
  • Graduates of the CAARR program who need extra hours to qualify for certification or are applying for CAS II
  • Applicants who have completed basic hours and are interested in
    becoming CAADAC certified.

This course is designed to introduce counselors and therapists to treatment strategies and techniques utilized for various populations. It has an advanced focus of Gender, Co-Occurring Disorders and Forensic Studies.  
  • Course Objectives
    • Gain knowledge of both mental health and substance abuse treatment when working
    with clients for whom both issues are relevant
    • Identify current and emerging models of service delivery
    • Describe gender services and the importance of gender and culture in services
  •  Identify and review diagnostic criteria and other assessment material
  • Describe terminology related to mental health, criminal justice, gender and substance abuse
  • Review models of service in the criminal justice service settings such as theraputic communities, drug court and in-prison programs
    • Describe different therapeutic strategies for each specific population
    • Describe Tap 21 eight practice dimensions and the delivery of services associated
    with Tap 21
     


    After attending this course students will:
     
    • Meet the academic qualifications for CAARR and Breining Institute AOD certification.
    • Meet 1/2 required academic hours for CAADAC (not including class room practicum) 
    • Receive a certitificate of expertise in GENDER STUDIES, CO-OCCURRING STUDIES and CRIMINAL JUSTICE STUDIES.
